Bandari FC dismiss coach Mbungo for poor results

Bandari FC have shown Rwandan coach Andrea Cassa Mbungo the exit door.

The club’s Board of Trustees vice chairman Bernard Osero said that after lengthy deliberations on Saturday evening, it was agreed that Mbungo should pave the way for a new head coach.

“We had a mutual agreement with coach Mbungo to end his services at the club,” said Osero. 

“We have progressed discussions towards that end, but we shall conclusively issue a statement later,” said the official.

Osero said Mbungo failed to give the needed results as per his contract, thus the need to enter into a mutual agreement to leave the club.

Mbungo leaves the Mombasa-based outfit just having claimed six wins this season after 18 rounds of matches. The team has 26 points.

The Rwandan tactician, previously with AFC Leopards, joined Bandari in January last year when he took over from Ken Odhiambo and steered the team to the third position in the 2021/22 Premier League with 52 points from 32 rounds of matches.

Born in January 1968, Mbungo featured for three Burundian teams; Dynamo, Atletico and Flamingo as a goalkeeper before he quit playing and turned to coaching in 1994 at the age of 26.

He also coached Rayon Sports, SC Kiyovu, AS Kigali and Police, all of Rwanda before he crossed to Kenya to start his professional coaching at AFC Leopards, in 2019.

With the absence of Mbungo, assistant coach Anthony Kimani will hold brief until the end of the season, as the team prepares to host Gor Mahia on Sunday when the league resumes after a two-week break.
