Kenyan footballers come together to voice dissatisfaction

Nairobi, Kenya: Amid wrangles on the management and modalities of the 2015 football league in Kenya, Thursday afternoon saw a first one in Kenyan football when prominent footballers of top flight clubs greeted their followers on social media with a voice of dissatisfaction. It was not just the players’ dissent that attracted attention but the precision with which they expressed it deserves notice.

-           As a footballer in Kenya, I’m not happy!

That was the message they posted on their Facebook pages and Twitter handles throughout the afternoon eliciting a jubilant reaction full of solidarity from their fans who expressed their approval of the message.

Explaining to Standard Sports the direction taken by the players, AFC Leopards Goalkeeper Wycliffe Kasaya maintained that with the incessant squabbles on the running of football in Kenya, the main casualties would be the players. A visibly infuriated Kasaya said “We do not want to lose sponsors, we do not want to lose the precious branding opportunity that we have in terms of broadcast and we must stand to be heard.”

The “I’m not happy” message was arrived upon by over two hundred players whose livelihoods depend on Kenyan football and, as Kasaya intimated, will continued to be highlighted throughout the week well into the weekend. And should the league, as planned by the KPL, fail to kick off this weekend the Kenyan International is quick to add: “expect to see us marching to Harambee House on Monday morning.”
