Fact check: Court did not order woman to pay Sh23,000 to boyfriend for 'eating fare'

News
 A court gavel.

Kenyan women can rest easy after a story claiming that a court ordered a woman to pay her boyfriend Sh23,000 for taking money meant for fare and not showing up to his birthday party was declared fake news.

The Judiciary Kenya confirmed this on their Twitter page, saying the article was fake news.

The said article originated from a satirical platform known for sharing satire and sarcastic news that often spreads quickly on the internet.

The article was retweeted 437 times and had 1078 likes.

However, before the judiciary ascertained that it was fake news, Kenyans' reactions to the ruling were swift, dividing Kenyan men and women.

The issue of Kenyan men sending their female counterparts money for fare money and failing to show up is a recurring story.

Former Nairobi governor, Mike Sonko, took to Twitter to share his thoughts, writing; "I did not know that you can sue a woman for eating your fare and have your cash refunded with interest, if this happened during my youthful days I would have sued 5000 women."

However, he urged ladies to continue with the trait, saying, "Eat the fare. If you are arrested I will bail you out."
