Uhuru attends Malindi mass and tours Lamu port

President Uhuru Kenyatta (pictured) surprised worshippers at the St. Anthony Cathedral Catholic Church in Malindi when he joined them for prayers without prior notice.

Uhuru later flew to Lamu for a tour of the new port which is expecting its first ship to dock this week. He was received by Kenya Ports Authority board chairman Rtd General Joseph Kibwana.

Uhuru arrived at the church compound at 9.30am and headed straight to the church where he was received by the church committee led by Father Joseph Ngala and church chairman Kennedy Otieno.

The President has been in the Coast region since Tuesday to inspect development projects and he spent Saturday night at State House Mombasa, but decided to worship in Malindi on his way to Lamu.

“We are very pleased to have received the president of the Republic of Kenya for the first time in history and he really surprised us because we had no such plans, you are welcome your Excellency,” said Mr Otieno.

The President, who freely mingled with faithful, said that he decided to worship in Malindi on his way to Lamu so that he could feel what Christians in Malindi feel.

He said the development projects he was inspecting were all geared towards creating jobs for Kenyans and improving security. “The father has told us in his sermon that each one of us has a responsibility to better the lives of others and as a Government we are committed to doing so by investing in life-changing projects,” he said.

“As you know the Government is implementing several projects in Kilifi County, including the Malindi-Sala gate road that is near completion (and) the Sabaki- Marafa road.”
