Second hand car importers to sue state over inspection monopoly

MOMBASA, KENYA: Second hand car importers have threatened to move to court to force the government to overturn the monopoly enjoyed by the sole inspector of vehicles imported into Kenya from Japan.

They have also threatened to sue to compel the government to harmonise conflicting regulations and requirements on the 8 year age limit policy on imported used cars.

The dealers accused the government of ignoring plea to licence three more firms to do pre-shipment inspection services in order to bring down the cost of importing vehicles and reduce delay in shipping them to Kenya.
The over 80 main secondhand cars importers issued a one week ultimatum for the Kenya Bureau of Standard (Kebs) to license three more firms to inspect cars destined into the country.
