MALINDI: Tourism stakeholders in Malindi are upbeat over the planned expansion of the airport and want the Government to fast-track compensation to land owners. Malindi and Watamu Tourist Association Interim Chairman Philemon Mwavala said compensation ought to be effected, before commencement of the expansion. "We see the airport expansion as long overdue and a major solution to the perennial low season occasioned in and around Malindi and Watamu tourism circuits," Mwavala said.
Malindi Airport Manager Walter Agong however noted that more than 100 families will be compensated before the expansion of the runway. The airport's runway stretches for 1.4kms and is expected to be expanded to 2.5kms. Agong said work on the terminal building with a spacious car park, entrance and business centre is complete, bringing the total cost of the overhaul to Sh2 billion. The expansion will see the airport handle bigger aircraft.
