End of public say on agency nominees nominees

By Cyrus Ombati

Those opposed to the nominees to the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) have until today to submit their objections to Parliament.

Clerk of the National Assembly Patrick Gichohi wants those against the names to drop their memoranda to the Departmental Committee on Administration and National Security for consideration prior to approval by the House.

"The Committee now invites interested members of the public to submit any representations that they may have on the suitability or otherwise of the nominees for appointment to serve in the NPSC in the stated capacities," Gichohi said in a notice.

President Kibaki nominated Amina Masoud as the chairperson of the Commission, but Prime Minister Raila Odinga has said there was no consultation and agreement on the issue.

The President also nominated Esther Chui-Colombini, Ronald Musengi, James Atema, Shadrack Mutia, and Mary Auma Owuor as members.

The Prime Minister expressed his objections to the same after Speaker Kenneth Marende read them in the House for consideration.

Britain had expressed concerns over the disagreements and asked Kibaki and Odinga to agree on the nominations.

Interim High Commissioner Dr Peter Tibber said his government is concerned that this process keeps slipping adding its urgent completion is critical.

"The National Police Service Commission will help the police improve the perception of fairness and standards within police ranks, raising morale in the process," he said.
