Police to recruit 7,000 trainees

Some 7,000 police trainees will be recruited early next year ahead of the General Election.

Internal Security PS Francis Kimemia said the recruitment would take place either in February or March.

It will be the second time the Government will be enlisting such a big number of police recruits.

The first group was recruited in June, last year.

Kimemia said the exercise is aimed at getting enough personnel to manage elections.

"We do not want to see a repeat of 2007 and that is why we have to recruit another 7,000 personnel as soon as the current group goes for internship," said Kimemia.

The current lot, which is at the Administration Police Training College, Embakasi, GSU training College, Embakasi, and Kiganjo Police College, Nyeri, is expected to go for internship in January.

Constables will be trained for 15 months, including a three-month compulsory internship, while cadets will be in college for 21 months, including a three-month internship.
