Poor roads hinder relief food distribution

Distribution of relief food to starving families in parts of Baringo County has been delayed after transporters were blocked from passing through a private conservancy.

A lorry belonging to World Vision was barred from passing through the conservancy with the management citing security reasons.

Speaking in Marigat Thursday, local leaders led by councillor Kimunyan Meja called on the Government to intervene to ensure that food reaches people on time.

"The action is regrettable. Over 1,000 residents are starving and are in dire need of emergency relief food," said Meja.

The leaders called on Roads Minister Franklin Bett to repair dilapidated roads in the area, which prompted the lorries to opt for a short cut through the conservancy.

"Heavy rains pounding the area have aggravated the problem. Passing through the conservancy is the only way to access other areas," said Meja. He said persistent drought had led to the drying up of water sources, forcing residents to walk long distances in search of the precious commodity.

Leaders have expressed fear that many schools might not open for third term next week as many students are yet to be enrolled in school feeding programme.

Marigat DC Saul Moywaywa confirmed delay in the distribution of the food aid but assured residents that the situation was under control.

"We are in consultation with the management of the conservancy. Many of their rangers had gone for patrols and there was no one to escort the lorry as per the regulations," said the DC.

Moywaywa said the management has limited entry into the conservancy to curb rampant cases of poaching.
