Gideon hails South Sudan’s freedom

Kanu Vice-Chairman Gideon Moi has paid tribute to the late Dr John Garang for leading the struggle for the independence of the Republic of South Sudan.

Gideon, who led a Kenyan delegation to Eastern Equatoria state of South Sudan as part of independence celebrations, said it was unfortunate that the late Garang fought and died before he could see the country become autonomous.

"We thank God that he has enabled those of us who are present today to witness this great day," he added.

Gideon noted that during the war, Kenya offered sanctuary and support to people who were displaced and injured.

"Kenya will continue providing assistance in all ways possible in the field of education, infrastructure, security and many other sectors," he said.

Gideon further noted that Kenya will improve the road network that links the two nations.

As he conveyed greetings from former President Daniel Moi, Gideon thanked President Salva Kiir and all Sudanese for the birth of their nation.

He noted Kenyans as well as the rest of Africa had been waiting for "the great day" the same way the people of Sudan had.
