Traffic police in Naivasha have decried the high number of accidents along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The officers termed the 10km stretch from Delamere milk shop to Kayole estate a black spot.

Naivasha traffic base commander Chief Inspector Roy Njeru said eight people have far died this year on the short section of the road and many more seriously injured.

Speaking during a road safety campaign near Mithuri estate and along the highway, the police boss said that they had identified two more black spots on the highway.

During the campaign, school-going children, motorcycle operators and locals were educated on how to cross the highway. He urged motorcycle operators to use reflective clothing and wear helmets.

Elsewhere, police in Machakos say 95 per cent of road accidents are caused by human error. Machakos OCPD Richard Kerich said careless driving and speeding are major contributors to the accidents.

Speaking to reporters in his office, he asked motorists to exercise caution to reduce road carnage.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Red Cross Society and St John’s Ambulance have intensified road safety campaigns.

Yesterday, officials from the two organisations held a procession from the Red Cross offices to Machakos DCs office where they met boda boda cyclists and sensitised them on the need to adhere to traffic rules.
