Lai calls on pastors to preach ‘No’ message

By PETER ATSIAYA

Redeemed Gospel Church leader Wilfred Lai has asked his pastors in Western Kenya to spearhead campaigns against the Proposed Constitution in their churches.

Dr Lai yesterday met the pastors in Kisumu, accompanied by Kisumu Gospel Church’s Mark Kegohi.

Journalists were not allowed into the meeting at Kisumu Redeemed Church.

"Our presiding bishop has not come to make a political statement, this is a routine meeting," Bishop Kegohi said. A source at the meeting told The Standard the forum was used to campaign against the Proposed Constitution.

Earlier, police accorded Lai tight security from the Kisumu Airport to the church. Organisers of the meeting feared that youths might block the cleric from the meeting. But many were caught unawares.

Local leaders said the police action was unwarranted, as it painted the town negatively.

A member of ‘Yes’ secretariat Charles Mamba said anybody was free to campaign for or against the document in the town.
