Wako, CJ meet judges over standoff

By Evelyn Kwamboka

Three judges held a consultative meeting with the Judicial Service Commission after a standoff with lawyers. Attorney General Amos Wako and Chief Justice Evan Gicheru attended the meeting aimed at resolving the issue.

Lawyers in Kitale have been on strike for the last two months. The Law Society of Kenya recently said there is a crisis in the Judiciary due to worsening working relations between the Bench and the Bar.

The meeting yesterday resolved High Court judges, Justice Nicholas Ombija (Kitale), Justice Mary Ang’awa (Eldoret) and Murugi Mugo (Meru) would remain in their stations. Lawyers have been calling for their transfer. Wako declined to give details of the meeting, saying he was invited as a member. Justice Ombijah was transferred to Kitale two and a half years ago. Justice Angawa, who moved from Kericho to replace Justice John Osiemo, has served in Eldoret for two months.
