The Government has released 213 petty offenders to serve under the community service order.

Coast Prisons Commander James Kodieny said the move by Judiciary, probation department and Prisons was meant to ease congestion behind bars.

Mr Kodieny said the inmates had instructions to work at the community for two hours daily, supervised by the Government.

He, however, said before the decision on the inmates to undergo the community service offer, there must be thorough investigation by the three arms of Government.

He said the main beneficiaries of the programme would be inmates at Shimo la Tewa annex and Kingorani prisons. Kodieny said the beneficiaries would be required to arrive at the community centre early and work for at least two days.

"We shall deploy the boy inmates to work at chiefs’ offices and CDF projects and other Government institutions," he said.

Kodieny said they released the inmates to assure the pubic the offenders though released were still working for the community.
