Police were on Sunday yet to recover the official car of Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Vice-chairman Hassan Omar, after it was stolen in Nairobi.

The car, registration number GK A549H, was stolen from Mr Omar’s driver on Friday night in an incident that has left many of his colleagues disturbed.

The driver had dropped Omar at his residence in Kilimani and drove towards Naivasha Road in Riruta, where the carjacking happened.

He told police he had parked the car on the roadside at about 8.30pm and went to buy vegetables, but when he came back he found three gunmen standing near the vehicle.

The gang forced him to open the doors before they bundled him into the backseat, as one of them took the steering wheel. According to Omar, the gang was after him because they asked his driver where he was.

"When the driver informed them he had dropped me home, they sought to know who usually opens the gate for me and he said it is the guard," said Omar.

At that point the gang reportedly asked the driver if he drives "yule mtu anayesumbua watu (the man who bothers others) and demanded to know his residence.

Omar told The Standard the thugs changed their minds and drove to a bush off Waiyaki Way, where they abandoned his driver.

On Sunday, police said they were yet to recover the car, but were making efforts to do so.

Lang’ata OCPD Simon ole Kina said a team of detectives was hunting down the gang to establish their motive.
