Defending champions Kenya Police and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) were deadlocked at 13 points each as the first leg of the Sportpesa National Boxing League concluded on Saturday night at the Modern Fitness Boxing Lounge in Mombasa.

The pugilists now head back to the gym to prepare for the second leg in Kisumu next month. Police and KDF shared the spoils after they won four bouts each at the final stage. It was, however, Omar Kasongo Sports Academy (OKSA) that emerged as the surprise team after they bagged nine points to settle for the second slot while Prisons had eight points.

Kentrack and Coast tied on four points, while Kenya National Hospital and Kibera were deadlocked on two points each. Ndenderu and Nairobi had a point each while Tommy G were pointless to remain bottom-placed.

For individual performance, Peter Kiarie of Police beat Mohammed Hussein (OKSA) 3-0 in the light fly weight category, while Morris Ochieng (Police) hit Joshua Musyoki (Coast) 3-0 in fly. In bantam, KDF’s Isaac Meja defeated Richard Ogolla (OKSA) 3-0, and Stanley Ogutu (Kentrack) silenced Prison’s Francis Riziki 3-0 in light weight. The light welter crown went to David Wainana (OKSA) after flooring Duncan Ochanda (Kibera) 2-1 while John Kyalo (Thika) knocked out Denzel Onyango (OKSA) in the welter weight category. Edwin Okongo (KDF) needed four minutes to technically knock out Chris Orengo (Coast) in the second round of the middle weight category while Police’s Humphrey Ochieng overpowered KDF’s Hezron Maganga 3-0 in light heavy.
