Mr smarty-pants

By Crystal Okusa

Most men pay little attention to their under garments, yet these articles of clothing need to be carefully selected to boost comfort, style and even confidence.

Undershirts and vests

Vests are a must-wear under formal office shirts. Apart from making your shirt look brighter and neatening your appearance, vests offer modesty by covering your chest and torso, which might be visible if your shirt is somewhat see-through.

White cotton vests and undershirts are the most popular. Stock up on several.

Underpants

Have a variety of boxers and briefs to wear with different trousers and shorts as appropriate. Boxer shorts are roomier and a classic style preferred by most men. They are suitable for wearing with baggy shorts and casual trousers.

It is not appropriate to wear boxers with dress pants or office trousers. Briefs are suitable when you prefer support over comfort.

A well fitting pair can make you feel and look good when paired with fitting trousers.

Briefs are also a good choice to wear for sporting activities.

Boxer briefs offer both support and freedom — a perfect compromise for the modern man. You can wear this with both formal and casual trousers.

High-cut briefs and thongs are for the confident and daring man. They are more fun than practical.

Active underwear

With the gym being a part of the modern man’s life, you will need this kind of underwear for your workouts. They have a built-in lining.

Socks

Dress socks should strictly be worn with dress pants. Your socks should match your trousers, not your shoes. Dress socks are usually plain but also come in conservative patterns such as argyle.

Casual socks come in a wide variety of material, colours and patterns. Wear thick cotton socks for sporting activities to cushion your feet and absorb sweat.
