Moi University the centre of activity in Eldoret

By Anderson Ojwang

From owning a textile company to making major contributions to one of the main hospitals, Moi University is a big player in Eldoret town.

With three campuses, Chepkoilel, Annex and Eldoret West and an annual budget of Sh5 billion, the university is a major economic force.

Before the establishment of these campuses, estates such as Kimumu, Chepkoilel, Huruma, Mwanzo, Road Block, Khahoya, Baringo and Mile Nne were smaller and cheaper.

"Most of the upmarket estates in the town such as Elgonview are occupied by our staff while our students occupy houses in the middle class estates. They are driving the development and expansion in the housing sector," says Mr Otieno Jowi a lecturer at the School of Education.

The university revived Rift Valley Textile Mill (Rivatex) which employs Eldoret residents and has spurred other related businesses.

Mr Milton Obamba, a visiting scholar from UK Centre for research in Higher Education Carnegie Research Institute, says the economy of the town depends on the university, which accounts for the top-earning employees. "Most of the cyber cafÈs are frequented and filled by university staff and students who spend a lot of resources," he says.

Ms Judy Kosgey, a student says Eldoret town boosts of several entertainment joints that are always filled.

Community service

She says businesses are investing in bars and nightclubs because students flock to them

"Students take part in community activities such as refilling potholes and clean ups," says Kosgey.

Ms Margaret Businei, a resident of the town, says the presence of Moi University School of Medicine has improved access to quality health care. "Moi Referral and Teaching Hospital has top medical personnel and facilities," he says.

Mr Joseph Koskei, a banker, says because of the expertise and training by local farmers, the university staff has improved maize and wheat yields.

There are many benefits from living next to such a major university, he says.
