Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed yesterday presided over the launch of the World Athletics heritage plaque awarded to Iten for its contribution to the development of athletics.

The CS was accompanied by British High Commissioner to Kenya Jane Mariott, Environment and Forestry Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo, Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei, Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos and a host of retired and active world-beating athletes.

Amina also presided over the launch of Sh7.9 billion Iten Municipality urban economic plan funded by the British Government.

She said sports will help stimulate the socio-economic growth of Iten.

“Iten has produced world beating athletes for many years. The support from British Government will go a long way in improving sports development and nurture talents,” she said.

Tolgos said Iten was what it is today because of athletes. “Athletes have raised the prominence of the once humble and abandoned town,” he said.

He praised the global athletics governing body for honouring Iten as an athletics heritage.

In a video link, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said they were delighted to award the plaque to Iten.
