Kelvin Kiptum nominated for 2023 Men's World Athlete of the Year award

World marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum has been nominated for the 2023 Male Athlete of the Year Award.

In an announcement by World Athletics on Thursday, October 12, Kiptum is among 11 other male athletes nominated for the award globally. 

Kiptum is the current world record holder after winning the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, October 11, in the men’s title.

The 23-year-old hit the record at an official time of two hours and 35 seconds, surpassing Eliud Kipchoge's previous mark by 34 seconds.

Since his debut in athletics last year, he has set straight three records from when he first won in Valencia, Spain in December 2022 and the London marathon in April this year.

Other male athletes in the category include; Asian javelin champion Neeraj Chopra (India), Ryan Crouser (USA), diamond league champion in pole vault Mondo Duplantis (Sweden), and 3000m steeplechase champion Soufiane El Bakkali.

Other nominees are European 1500m record holder Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Pierce LePage, Noah Lyles (USA), Alvaro Martin, European indoor champion Miltiadis Tentoglou, and Karsten Warholm.
“The athletes were selected by an international panel of athletics experts comprising representatives from all six continental areas of World Athletics.” 

The voting for the winner will end on October 28, and results to be announced on November 13 and 14 while the finalist will be revealed on December 11.
