Eldoret town, the commercial hub of the North Rift region, had an unusual few residents yesterday as most families followed up Dr Ruto's inauguration during the day that had also been declared a public holiday.

There was less traffic in the usually busy streets as most residents remained indoors.

"I decided to follow up the event at home rather than making long travel to Nairobi. We are glad as we witness a peaceful transition in our beloved country," Mr Paul Rotich, a resident in Nandi, told The Standard.

Marusin Kogo, also a resident of the North Rift, said he chose to remain at home and follow the swearing-in of the new president on TV.

"As Kenyans, we are happy that the entire electioneering period and the transition has been peaceful, and we expect the new government to deliver services equally to all citizens without bias," said Mr Kogo.

He added: "We expect the new administration under Dr Ruto to fulfill its pledges to boost development and improve standards of living. The government should fight corruption and ensure there are no leakages in government coffers."

He stated that the protection of resources will protect Kenyans from the burden of being over-taxed to achieve basic services.
