A man was charged on Wednesday at a Kibera court with smashing his former girlfriend's cellphone worth Sh20,000.

Justine Okari denied the charge of malicious damage to property when he appeared before Resident Magistrate William Tullel.

He was also accused of creating disturbance by insulting the complainant at her workplace on March 26.

According to a police report presented in court, Okari is claimed to have visited the shop where the former girlfriend works in Sarit Centre in Westlands.

He request her to accompany him to his residence situated along Ngong Road.

"The lady allegedly refused to accompany him because they had broken up owing to constant fighting," the police report added.

The report added that after the girlfriend refused to accompany Okari to his residence, he allegedly started hurling insults at her and threatened to kill her.

Okari allegedly snatched her phone and smashed it on the floor, thereby damaging it.

The complainant is said to have been saved by workers in nearby shops who moved in and separated the two.

Okari was released on a bond of Sh100 000 or alternatively pay a cash bail of Sh50,000.

The case will be mentioned on April 6.
