Secondary school teacher commits suicide

Kennedy Ochieng’, a 41-year-old teacher at Nyong’ong’a Secondary School in Nyakach, Kisumu County, committed suicide at his village home in Homa Bay.

The teacher reportedly hanged himself at Kalal village in Rachuonyo North sub-County.

His brother Michael Ouma spotted the body dangling from a mango tree.

“I looked for a panga and cut the rope thinking I would save him. But he was already dead,” said Ouma.

Ouma said his brother had never shown any signs of depression before the incident.

“I spoke to him at midday. He interacts well with the family,” said Ouma.

The teacher’s sister-in-law Caroline Anyango said she had earlier seen him with a rope. “When I asked him about the rope, he hid it in his pocket and said he intended to use it for tying his bed,” Anyango said.

Assistant Chief of Kobuya East Pancras Lumumba said he had liaised with police from Kendu Bay Police Station, who have begun investigations into the teacher’s death.

“We have pastors, elders, government officials and professionals who offer counselling services, the residents should seek help from them instead of committing suicide,” Lumumba said.

The body was moved to Kendu Adventist Mission Hospital Mortuary.
