Residents protest rampant cases of insecurity

Laikipia residents are protesting the increase in cases of bandit attacks, especially in parts of Ol-Moran and Ng’arua divisions.

They claim the attackers, suspected to be from the neighbouring Baringo County, were causing havoc and untold suffering to the families living in the two administrative divisions.

Speaking at Luoniek village in Ol-Moran division after the killing of a primary school teacher in the area, the residents are now calling on Interior and Government Coordination Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai to intervene.

The locals, led by Sosian Ward MCA Jacob Endung', called on the CS and IG to ensure the officers, whom they accused of laxity, are moved to ensure security is improved in the area.

The teacher, identified as Esunyon Ekiru, was shot dead and 18 goats stolen from his home on Friday night by armed livestock raiders.

The residents claim that Anti-Stock Theft Unit officers who are barely a kilometre away from the scene took several hours to respond to distress calls.

"We cannot be losing lives each and every day. The State has to take action against these bandits," said Endung'.

He called for the immediate redeployment of National Police Reservists suspended last year by the State.
