Woman accused of selling her child arrested in Nyamira

A woman who sold her son for about 14,000 has been arrested. Irene Kemunto, who is the mother of the seven-year-old child who was trafficked from Elementaita in Nakuru County, was arrested at Nyansiongo, Nyamira County, alongside another woman who was identified as Ziporah Nyabate.

Nyabate who had allegedly bought the kid for Sh13,800 was nabbed at her home in Kisii Town where the child was found.

The incident happened between June 10 and June 19.

It had been reported at Elementaita Police Station that the child had gone missing. The tracing was then done after it appeared that the man, who married the child’s mother and child bore his name was found in Nyansiongo in Borabu sub-County.

According to Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba, the accused woman’s mother had reported the disappearance of the grandson at Elementaita and the matter booked under OB number 18/06/2020.

The woman who was arrested with the kid told police that she had legitimately acquired custody of the child.

It could not be immediately established why the lady decided to sell her own son.

Police are still investigating the matter pending prosecution and according to Mr Mariba, the case will be due for prosecution after a full report of the investigation is compiled.

"Currently, the two suspects are in police custody as they await charges to be opened against them," Mariba said.

This is not the first incident where a mother is selling her kid.

February this year, a 23-year old woman was arrested in Migori Town after she went public that she was selling her two daughters to raise Sh400,000.

The woman said she wanted the money to buy land and raise her other two kids on after she differed with the husband.

Four years ago, another woman in the same town was arrested as she tried to auction her newly born baby saying she needed money to enable her to fend for her other kids.
