At least 39 people who tested positive for the coronavirus have been discharged, bringing the country’s total recoveries to 592.
In Thursday’s Covid-19 status update, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe (above) lauded efforts by health workers across the country in fighting the disease that has now claimed four more people, raising the death toll to 78.
Today, Kenya has recorded 124 new cases of the coronavirus, from 2,640 samples tested in the last 24 hours.
The nationally tally is now at 2,340 cases.
According to the Health Ministry, Kenya has so far tested 87,698 samples.
119 of the new cases are Kenyans, two Somalis, two Tanzanians and two others are Eritrean nationals.
One hundred of those are male and 24 female, which makes 70 per cent of the recorded infections- male.
Mombasa County holds the highest cases at 40, Nairobi a close second with 38 new cases, Busia with 26, Kajiado –six cases, Garissa with two new cases and Murang’a County has one new case.
CS Kagwe has noted that Elgeyo Marakwet County has also recorded its first case, which brings to 36 the number of counties with confirmed cases of the disease.
The CS was also quick to add that the disease has overstretched the limits of our country but has not managed to break the cords that bind our nation. “There is always a silver lining,” he said.
“We are not yet out if the woods. The fight against this disease has proven that it is a marathon and not a sprint,” cautioning that we should not take it for granted.
Home care
In the latest developments, the government is looking at sending some Covid-19 patients home, noting that over 80 per cent of patients in hospitals are asymptomatic.
“A lot of people in isolation facilities may be released to be taken care of in their homes. The Ministry has completed the process of home-based care protocols. I appeal to Kenyans, that when we release the protocols and we see people coming home, there is no need for stigmatization,” he pleaded.
This he says is the only way that we can cope with what to expect in the future.
In efforts to deal with Covid-19, State has disbursed a Sh5 billion conditional grant to all 47 counties. The CS said that it is now up to county governments to utilize these funds to safeguard the lives of its people and to ensure that all health facilities are catered for.
