TSC: We'll not slash tutors' pay

The more than 300,000 teachers will receive their full salaries for March even as lockdown over coronavirus looms.

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) said salaries have been processed and will be sent to teachers before end of the month.

Commission head of communications Beatrice Wababu said teachers must not panic over their salaries. “We want to assure teachers their March salaries will be paid in full before end month,” said Ms Wababu.

The assurance comes over fears that teachers’ salaries may be delayed or partially paid due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered all schools closed for 30 days as a measure to curb the spread of the virus.

Some employers are already pushing for pay cuts and unpaid leave for their staff to cushion businesses. “We shall not slash pay for teachers. They will get their full salaries,” said Wababu.

Data from TSC on full pay shows that based on implementation of the 2016-2021 salary increment, the lowest paid teacher, under job group B5 (Primary teacher II, formerly job group G), will receive Sh24,476.

Secondary teacher III and Primary teacher I, who fall under job group C1 (formerly job groups H, J), will earn Sh30,595.

Secondary teacher II, Secondary teacher II UT, primary Special Needs Education teachers, under job group C2 (formerly job group K), will take home Sh39,595.

Chief Principals, formerly in job group Q and R but now in D5 will take home Sh139,735.
