Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has taken over the county’s controversial health docket as his government readies to counter the spread of the coronavirus.

Prof Nyong’o transferred health executive Judith Atyang to the business and cooperatives docket.

Prof Atyang replaces former county executive member Richard Ogendo, who was sacked last year in October. “If there is any sector that has given me a headache, it is the health docket. I am happy to exit to new ground,’’ she said.

Atyang made a major shakeup in her first month in office, but the changes were put on hold by Nyong’o after medics protested.

Dr Joyce Osogo was nominated county executive for roads, transport and public works, replacing Thomas Ondijo who was sacked last year. The mini-reshuffle announced yesterday follows a crisis in the county’s health sector, which has witnessed medics strike for two successive months.

County Secretary Geoffrey Kigochi said the governor’s changes were guided by Article 179 (2,b) and section 30 (d), of the County Government Act.
