Atwoli: Uhuru doesn't have to attend BBI meet

Central Organisation of Trade Unions Secretary General Francis Atwoli (pictured) has told off leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto who are insisting that President Uhuru Kenyatta must attend the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) rallies.

Mr Atwoli claimed the crop of leaders who have been spearheading the BBI rallies are enough to deliver the push for a referendum.

“The president does not need to attend BBI rallies. We are equal to the task of delivering BBI to Kenyans and no leader has the powers to summon the president to attend BBI rallies," Atwoli said in Kisumu during a meeting with officials from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIf). He added that the push for a referendum was unstoppable..

In the last couple of days, leaders allied to the DP have been saying that they want President Kenyatta to attend the rallies.

This comes as leaders prepare to attend the Nakuru BBI meeting which has been slated for March 21.

The meetings have been led by Opposition chief Raila Odinga. Yesterday, Atwoli said the push for a referendum through the BBI will yield much and vowed to rally unionists to also support the quest.
