Four in hospital following cholera outbreak in Murang'a

Four people have been hospitalised at Murang’a Level Five Hospital after contracting cholera.

Laboratory tests at the hospital on Saturday confirmed an outbreak of the disease after patients suffering from diarrhoea sought treatment.

Diarrhoea cases have been reported in Kayole and Mjini areas within Murang’a Municipality.

This comes even as plans are underway to set up a Cholera Treatment Unit at the hospital.

The first reported case was that of an eight-year-old boy from Mjini on Friday. A 30-year-old man from Embassy village was later treated for the disease.

Murang’a County public health department has notified health and sanitation chief officer James Gitau of a crackdown on food vendors to contain the disease.

Officers recalled

Public health officers who were on leave have been recalled following the outbreak.

The four patients have been put in an isolation ward as further tests are conducted.

Murang’a County health and sanitation executive Joseph Mbai said public health officers have contained the situation and stopped the spread of the disease.

“The situation has been contained with locals being asked to observe hygiene in their homes and places of work,” said Mbai.

The public health officers are seeking  permission from the executive to remove food hawkers from the streets after most of them were found to be operating in unhygienic conditions, including at drainage channels.

In the past, cholera cases had been reported at Kenol and Kabati markets during rainy seasons
