Former long-serving Kanu Organising Secretary mourns Moi

Kenya has lost one of its richest history legacy with the death of former President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi.

While condoling with Mzee Moi's family, Kanu’s longest-serving Organising Secretary, Nathan Waliaula Munoko, 97, said that despite Moi's death, the rich legacy he has left behind will be difficult to delete.

“I am saddened by the death of a very close friend and dedicated leader whom we interacted closely during early independence,'' Munoko told The Standard on phone.

Munoko who describes himself as age mates with Mzee Moi doubled up as Kanu’s organising secretary and Minister for Works.

The former politician who served the longest time in the position -18 years, said that his relationship with Mzee Moi dates back to the time of the Kenya Africa Democratic Union (Kadu) days before serving as Member of Parliament for Bungoma Central, Works Minister, Organising Secretary and finally Kanu Executive Secretary.

''Mzee Moi followed well in the footsteps of our founding father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. We are all seeing fruits of good leadership today and pray that Kenya will continue to flourish as a peaceful nation,'' he said.

In the 1970s, Munoko’s name became synonymous with party headquarters. On many occasions, he spelt out party policy, especially on national elections and party clearance of candidates.

His position was so prominent that some observers ranked him third in the party hierarchy, after the president and the secretary-general.
