Bhang-smoking youth blamed for increased crime in Rongo

Resident of Kogutu village in Rongo subcounty on Thursday urged the government to fight the rampant selling of bhang.

Resident of Kogutu village in Rongo subcounty on Thursday urged the government to fight the rampant selling and consumption of bhang and other drugs.

On Thursday evening villagers held protests in Kamkuyu sub-location, Central Kamagambo, against youth who smoke bhang and get involved in crime.

Resident Pamela Akelo said bhang smoking is rampant especially by the river, which makes it hard for women to fetch water as they fear for their safety.

“Women and girls have been raped severally at the river."

Akelo said the communities are afraid of the ever increasing rate of people being attacked and properties being stolen.

“It is so sad people are not living in peace. We are afraid of being attacked by our own children who have become junkies,” she said.

Akelo's sentiment was echoed by clan elder Daniel Odenyo who also said bhang smoking has increased.
