The Nairobi County Assembly will today hold a special sitting to discuss the leadership crisis rocking City Hall.
This comes amid a plot by MCAs to impeach Governor Mike Sonko just days after he nominated Water Chief Officer Anne Mwenda as his deputy.
Nairobi Speaker Beatrice Elachi yesterday said today’s meeting had been convened in order to form an ad hoc committee that would oversee the resumption of county services, following the prosecution of Sonko over corruption allegations. The court has barred the governor from office.
“The sitting will provide more details on the functions of the committee but there will also be more items up for discussion,” said Ms Elachi.
In a gazette notice dated January 8, Elachi noted that the assembly will hold the sitting to “deliberate on county matters, which are not limited to the leadership crisis.”
Minority Leader David Mberia, however, revealed a plot to impeach the governor during another special sitting to be requested during today's proceedings.
Mr Mberia, who is also the MCA for Karen, further said that collection of signatures for the impeachment motion was ongoing.
Division has, however, rocked the assembly ahead of today’s special sitting, with some MCAs fearing the impeachment motion might be sneaked in.
Nominated MCA Mary Njambi claimed there was a plan by about 30 MCAs to ouster Sonko, but vowed to ensure it does not succeed.
