One person killed in evening road crash in Kakamega

One person died in a road accident at Soweto area, along the Mumias-Bungoma highway on Saturday evening after two vehicles collided head-on.

The crash happened when a truck driven from Bungoma headed to Mumias swerved on the road and rammed into a personal car.

The personal car had three occupants and was headed to Bungoma town.

Witnesses said the heavy rains pounding the area that evening were to blame as both drivers lost visuals.

According to Wilfred Waswa, a witness, the rain water that had stagnated on the side of the road prompted the driver of the Probox vehicle in front of the truck to engage emergency breaks. This then forced the truck driver to swerve to the other lane to avoid hitting the car from behind.

On swerving, the truck hit an oncoming salon car, colliding head-on.

The driver of the vehicle died on the spot while two passengers he was with in the car were injured and rushed to St Mary’s Mission Hospital, Mumias for treatment.

None of the four truck occupants were injured in the collision.

The body of the deceased was later taken to St Mary's Hospital Mortuary.

The accident caused a two-hour traffic snarl up on the busy highway.
