The fate of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko over assault on a senior police officer in the Coast region now lies with Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji.

Police in Taita-Taveta County yesterday said they had forwarded the file recommending assault charges against the governor to the DPP for action.

“We are waiting for direction from the DPP and we have our own file here for action,” County Police Commander Said Mohammed Kiprotich said yesterday.

Authorities said the governor could be brought to Voi to answer the new charges.

Sonko is reported to have assaulted Coast Regional Police Commander Rashid Yakub at the Ikanga airstrip on the outskirts of Voi town last Friday as he was being arrested over graft charges.

The police said they had already prepared the charge sheet and the governor would soon be arraigned in court.

Four witnesses among them Mr Yakub and three other police officers have been listed to testify against the governor, who confronted the police as he resisted to board a police helicopter.

The governor has already been arraigned in court over corruption.

Police officers at the Voi Police Station said the governor could be charged in court this week.
