More than 170 families displaced by floods

At least 176 families have been displaced by floods in Homa Bay County.

The families from a number of villages in Wang’chieng’ Location, Rachuonyo North sub-county have been forced to quit their homes.

They are now camping at Osodo Primary School after their homes were affected by the raging floods.

“We are undergoing a lot of difficulties caused by the floods. More families are still vacating their homes to camp at Osodo,” said Joe Ochola, a resident.

The floods have been caused river Miriu which broke its banks following heavy rains pounding the area.

Area Chief Peter Agunga said they expect more families to move from their homes.

“The floods are increasing and more people are likely to be affected,” said Agunga.

Homa Bay County Commissioner Harman Shambi decried the state of floods in various parts of the county.

Shambi said the worst affected sub-counties are Rachuonyo North and Ndhiwa.

In Ndhiwa, the floods were caused rivers Kuja and Oyombe breaking their banks.

The floods have destroyed food crops in large tracts of land in Ndhiwa, Rachuonyo North and other sub-counties.

“I urge residents in the flood-prone areas to move to higher grounds to avoid loss of lives,” Shambi said.
