Lupita bags another gong in New York critics circle awards

Kenyan Hollywood star Lupita Nyong’o (pictured) has bagged another prestigious award based on her role in an American horror film ‘Us’.

The New York Film Critics Circle Award this week named Lupita the Best Actress. The film, which was released on March 22, 2019 grossed Sh25.5 billion and had Lupita (pictured) play the role of Adelaide Wilson, a woman whose family is attacked by paranormal ghost like characters resembling real people.

This award becomes the latest decoration in Lupita’s career since she made a name for herself in the 2014 Academy Awards, also known as The Oscars for her role as Pasty in another moving film 12 years a slave.

She was named the best supporting actress then.

The film was based on a memoir by Solomon Northup, a New Yorker who was kidnapped by acquaintances in the mid-1800s and sold as a slave.

Her role in the movie, also saw her awarded Critics Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress as well.

Other milestones that have beautified Lupita’s career include Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role and BET Award for Best Actress in 2014.

Apart from her role in 12 Years a Slave and Us the 36-year-old, who is daughter to Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o, is also known for the Black Panther movie, which also had huge commercial success.

The movie grossed Sh63.1 billion, breaking the records set by Star Wars, Avengers, according to variety.com.

In this year’s New York Film Critics Circle Awards, Lupita has been named Best Actress alongside Antonio Banderas, for his role in Pain and Glory. The Best Film award went to The Irishman, while Bonny and Josh Safdie won Best Director for Uncut Gems.
