Forecast: Met sees more rain for five days

The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains for five days as from Friday.

According to forecast issued by Director of Kenya Meteorological Department Stella Aura on Thursday, the rains will continue into December.

“Heavy rainfall is likely to occur over parts of the northwest, highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the southeast lowlands and the Coast,” said the outlook.

The Lake Victoria basin, highlands west of the Rift Valley, Central and South Rift Valley (counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Transnzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia are expected to receive “rains over few places in the morning and showers and thunderstorms over several places in the afternoon and night, with temperature of between 10 to 31 degrees celcius.”

Highlands east of the Rift Valley including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka-Nithi counties are also expected to receive showers over several places.

The weather review for October 2019 and the outlook for November 2019 had also said that there will be heavy rains across the country as per the weather forecast released on November 1.

November is normally the peak month for the October-November-December (OND) short-rains season.

"The outlook for November 2019 indicates that most parts of the country are likely to experience above average rainfall for the month. This coupled with the already saturated grounds is likely to continue causing floods and landslides in affected parts of the country,” Ms Aura said.

"The rainy season will go on up to December but there will dry spells within the season."
