Suspect on the run after running over four people, stabbing man to death

Police in Meru are looking for a businessman who drove his car into a crowd, injuring at least four and stabbing a victim to death before disappearing in the night.

The unfortunate incident happened on Monday at Lailuba market in Tigania West, Meru County.

County Police Commander Tigania East police boss Peter Karanja said the man was known to locals but had managed to escape after the attack.

“He owns a shop at Muriri. What we know is he arrived at the market and drove his vehicle into people and stabbed some of them. We are pursuing him,” he said.

County police commander Patrick Lumumba said the suspect stabbed more people with a knife he had grabbed from a butchery at the Muriri trading centre.

Karanja said they have leads which will facilitate the police to nab the culprit.

"The injured were taken to some local health centres, and one referred to Meru Refferal and Teaching Hospital," Karanja said.

Muthara Assistant Commissioner Charles Egaire said the attacker is from Lubuthirwa.

“It appears it was a spontaneous attack. He just happened at the market and started attacking people, before disappearing into the night,” Egaire said.

Another case

Some unverified reports indicate that the middle-aged attacker is involved in another case after being arrested for killing and injuring camels.

The suspected reportedly complained of being threatened by the camels' owner before embarking on the killing spree.

“He recently hit two camels, killing one and injuring another."

The body of the deceased was taken to the Meru Referral and Teaching Hospital.
