Former VP Wamalwa's fete will be skipped this year

The annual commemoration of former Vice President Kijana Wamalwa's death will be skipped this year because of ongoing renovations at the Wamalwa mausoleum.

According to Dan Wafula, a family member, the Government is undertaking the renovations.

"Unlike previous years, we will not celebrate the event this year because of ongoing mausoleum repairs. We will mark the event privately as a family,” said Mr Wafula.

The annual commemoration is usually held on August 22, the day Wamalwa died while undergoing treatment at Royal Free State Hospital in London.

Meanwhile, a public celebration in remembrance of multiparty leader Masinde Muliro is set to be held later this month.

The celebration will be observed in Muliro's former political backyard of Trans Nzoia.

A group of Luhya professionals is making the arrangements for the fete that will be marked on August 14.

According to Ronald Jumbe, a spokesperson of the professionals, since Muliro died 27 years ago, no notable celebration has been held in his honour.

"Our agenda is to push for Muliro's ideals," said Mr Jumbe.
