Traders at Daraja Mbili open-air market are set to relocate in the next two months after the completion of a Sh204 million modern market.

The contractor is expected to do final touches on the project and hand it over to the county government.

Speaking during an inspection tour to markets under construction in Oyugis and Kisii, Transport and Infrastructure Chief Administrative Secretary Chris Obure said the Government had put emphasis on developing more markets countrywide.

“The Ministry will work with other organisations who are the other source of funding for such projects. Daraja Mbili was purely funded by the National Government,” said Mr Obure.

He explained that the market would provide market for fresh produce and boost farmers in the larger South Nyanza and parts of Rift Valley.

“Other than being a market centre, the modern structure will help decongest traffic on Daraja Mbili, create job opportunities for locals and act as a catalyst for other economic activities,” he said.

Obure called on the county government to improve hygiene and access roads to the market.
