Police have arrested four people suspected of stealing 10 crates of eggs worth Sh2, 500 at Deputy President William Ruto's farm in Sugoi, Uasin Gishu County.

The four, police reported, are workers at the DP's Yegen farm in Sugoi, Turbo constituency.

Eldoret West OCPD Zachariah Bitok said the suspects, two men and two women are being detained at Turbo Police Station for questioning.

Mr Bitok told The Standard a manager at the farm's poultry section realised at 11 am the eggs worth Sh2,500 were missing and alerted police

"All the workers denied knowledge of the missing eggs and the manager started a search and discovered that the four suspects had hidden the crates in one section of the farm," the OCPD said.

He said a team of detectives were deployed to establish the circumstances under which the workers stole eggs in what he termed as a very secure farm.

The poultry project is reportedly run by the DP and members of his family, with close supervision by his wife Rachel Rutto.

Bitok said they were investigating to establish if the workers colluded with outsiders to steal from the farm that is guarded by officers from the General Service Unit.

The firm supplies hundreds of crates of eggs to towns in the North Rift and Nairobi.

When The Standard attempted to get audience with the farm’s management and some workers, the GSU officers laughed off the theft report and denied that it had happened.

“Such a thing can never happen here. Unless it happened elsewhere,” an officer said.

Bitok said the four suspects will be arraigned in court as soon as investigations into the theft are concluded.

He said the 10 crates of eggs were recovered and will be used as an exhibit when the suspects are charged.

Second breach

In July 2017, a lone intruder made his way to the DPs Sugoi home and staged a daring attack that led to the death of a GSU officer manning a sentry at the gate to the home.

The attack prompted the deployment of elite officers from Nairobi to an 18-hour shootout before the intruder was subdued.

The intruder was shot dead and was later identified as Mohammed Ibrahim Mohamud, who hailed from Tandu village in Mandera East.

Attack at the home happened about 30 minutes after the DP had left the home for a trail of campaign rallies in Trans Nzoia and Narok.

However, questions lingered about the motive of the attack and how a single person could engage the Special Forces in a long-drawn gun battle.

Residents had then said they knew the attacker identifying him as ‘Omar’ and that he used to sell watches, perfumes, jackets, and shoes in Jua Kali area before moving to Turbo, some few kilometres from Sugoi home of Ruto.
