Union appeals for more teachers

Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers Secretary General  James Torome.

The Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) has petitioned the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to employ more special needs' education teachers to address current under-staffing.

KUSNET Secretary General James Torome  accused the government of overlooking the staffing needs of special needs schools.

“We have written to the TSC twice on the matter of understaffing in special schools. We wrote to them on May 30 and again on December 17, 2018 but we received no response. This is adversely affecting learning in these institutions,” said Mr Torome.

He appealed to the new Education CS, Prof George Magoha, to intervene and have 10,340 special needs teachers deployed to 2,068 special schools in the country.

Torome said TSC should set aside 30 per cent of teaching slots for special needs schools during hiring.
