A mother of four has been charged with robbery with violence in connection with an incident that occurred on June 28th, 2017.

Susan Wangare Njoroge was on Wednesday accused of carjacking a motorist at gunpoint along Riara road in Nairobi.

The suspect was arraigned before Milimani principal magistrate Francis Andayi.

She was accused of robbing Cyrus Kiogi Mwaura off his vehicle, a Toyota Harrier, worth Sh 2,830,000 while armed with a pistol.

The court heard that during the time of the robbery, Susan used violence on her victim and also allegedly stole a mobile phone.

The 40-year-old also faced a separate count of handling a stolen motor vehicle and a phone belonging to Cyrus.

The accused, who was not represented by any lawyer, pleaded not guilty to the counts.

The prosecution did not object to her release on bond and bail.

“Your honour I am a mother of four children, I cannot afford a lawyer to represent me, I am requesting to be granted very lenient bond terms [SIC],” Susan told the court.

Further, Susan said that she had a permanent place of residence well-known to police.

“Your honour I have been attending to police summons and when they required me, this proves that I am not a flight risk,” she added.

Milimani principal magistrate asked Susan to write a letter to the legal aid services board to request them to give her a lawyer to represent her in the case since robbery with violence is an offence that can attract a long prison term if she is found guilty.

According to police, Cyrus Kiogi was driving along Riara road with another car driving closely behind him.

Police allege that the suspects accosted him and introduced themselves as police officers.

They then forced him out of the car and drugged him before escaping in his car.

The car was spotted by police on February 15th with a new registration number and particulars.

The occupants were arrested, Susan being one of them.

Susan was granted a surety bond of sh 500,000 with an alternative of sh 500,000 cash bail.

The hearing was slated on April 8th.
