Traffic snarl-up expected on major roads in Nairobi-Police

Expect and be prepared for traffic snarl-up along some highways in Nairobi today, that is the warning from the National Police Service to motorists and travellers in the capital.

On its Twitter page, the NPS has said that due to the presence of state guests attending the UN Assembly in Gigiri, certain roads may have disrupted traffic. It adds that the plan is in place to ease the problem should the need arise.

The tweet reads: “We wish to inform the public that owing to the presence of several Heads of State and Governments visiting the country to attend the United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA) as well as the 3rd One Planet Assembly at UN Complex in Gigiri from 13th to 15th March 2019… Traffic arrangements have been made that could impact on normal traffic flow in the city.”

It further added that: “The roads likely to be affected on the days stated include; Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway and Limuru Road.”

“We, therefore, request motorists to obey directions given by Traffic Police in order to allow our esteemed visitors safe passage to and from various locations in the city.”

The ongoing UN meeting on the environment will end on March 15, 2019, Friday and has attracted various guests including sitting heads of states.

The UN Environment Assembly is under the theme 'Innovative Solutions for Environmental Challenges and Sustainable Consumption and Production.'

Among the dignitaries expected is the President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena who will join other world leaders in the event.

Today, French President Emmanuel Macron is also expected in the country for his first Kenyan visit. Macron will meet President Uhuru, after which they are expected to make a joint statement on bilateral ties as well as touring Nairobi Railway Station.
