Man commits suicide outside in-laws house

A domestic row ended on a fatal note after a man committed suicide outside his in-law's house at Eburru trading centre in Gilgil.

The 27-year-old b0dabodaoperator hanged himself on a tree in the compound after he was barred from going back with the wife whom they had fallen out with a month ago.

This came as leaders in the area decried the rising cases of suicide among the youth with drugs and alcohol abuse being the major contributor.

In the latest incident, the deceased had gone to his in-laws to pick his wife who had fled from home when an argument ensued forcing him to leave abruptly.

According to a resident Adam Kiragu, the young man had for some time quarrelled with his wife who left him and was living with her parents.

He said that his in-laws were opposed to the idea of letting their daughter go back to him saying he had not reformed in his wayward ways.

“He left the home but promised them he will be around for the night only for his body to be found Thursday morning hanging in one of the trees in the compound,” he said.

A local leader Anita Wangeci said the institution of marriage especially among youths was under threat and required concerted efforts to help save it.

Wangeci said many young people had resorted to alcohol and drugs use as their unions had become unbearable and called on church leaders to play their rightful role to guide them during turbulent times.

“The Church should stand up and offer the necessary guidance to our young people who face difficulties in their early years of marriage and by so doing incidences of suicide will be minimized,” she said.

Meanwhile, transport along the Mai Mahiu-Limuru road was paralysed for over six hours following a traffic jam that spanned over 20Kms last night.

The jam that extended to the early hours of Thursday morning was occasioned by a trailer ferrying goods to a neighbouring country that developed a mechanical problem blocking the road completely.

“We have managed to clear the road but the whole night vehicles were not moving due to the stalled trailer”, said a senior police officer who declined to be named.
