Terror suspect accused of recruiting youth into Al-Shabaab detained
A man suspected to be associated with a terror group will remain locked at Kakamega Police Station after the officers obtained custodial orders to detain him.
Rashid Abdalla is said to belong to the outlawed Al-Shabaab militia and has been training and recruiting the locals within Kakamega Town.
He was arrested on Sunday, January 27 after officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) obtained intelligence reports from the public.
According to the lead investigating officer Inspector Nicholas Sore, the suspect has been in constant communication with strange people and need sufficient time to analyze the communication.
“The suspect is believed to be connected to recruiting and training the members of the public to join a terror group. We require at least ten working days to enable us carry out further investigations which include analyzing his mobile phone which has vital information in our investigations,” said Inspector Sore in a sworn affidavit.
The phone which has been confisicated is said to have money transfer transactions believed to be used to fund the militia in the radicalization.
The investigators are also hunting for the recruits and the people believed to be in constant communication with the suspect as they piece together their investigations.

Abdalla who had opposed the custodial prayers by the investigating officer denied any involvement in terrorism saying the allegations are wild an unknown to him.
Kakamega Chief Magistrate Bildad Ochieng’ ordered the suspect to remain in police custody to allow the police their request to further the probe.
The matter shall be mentioned on February 11.
This comes in the wake of the Dusit D2 attack at Riverside Complex in Nairobi which claimed 21 lives.
Two people among them a cart-puller were injured on Saturday evening in Nairobi near Odeon roundabout after a luggage he was carrying exploded.
The DCI has intensified investigations into terror related activities to curb terrorism which has claimed several lives in the recent past.
