Four people died and 16 injured after a bus collided with a G4S courier truck on the Nyeri-Nanyuki highway.

The 45-seater bus ferrying passengers from Nairobi to Moyale was involved in a head-on collision on Thursday night with a G4S money courier truck at Msafiri Market.

Four occupants of the G4S truck, among them two police officers, one G4S officer and the driver died at the scene.

The Moyale Liner bus driver and two passengers are in critical condition.

Thirteen others are nursing minor injuries.

Wilberforce Sichirani, the Kieni East OCPD, said investigations are underway.

“Drivers should be more careful on the road and obey traffic rules to avoid such accidents,” he said.

Sichirani commended the fast response by Nyeri county government teams and the residents of Kyeni, saying they played major roles in the operation.

“The county ambulances helped us transport the injured to hospitals very fast and the fire engine assisted in freeing those who were trapped,” he added.

Some of the 16 injured occupants of the bus were taken to the Nyeri Provincial General Hospital and others to Nanyuki Cottage hospital.

The four who died at the scene were taken to Nanyuki Cottage Hospital Mortuary.

James Maina, a resident of Msafiri, was one of the first to respond.

He said the accident happened at around midnight.

“I called Kieni OCPD and the emergency assistance number 999 which was helpful,” he said.

The rescue operation, which took more than five hours, ended on Friday morning.
