Police arrests a man linked to murder cases in Gilgil

Police have arrested a 30-year-old man linked to the death of two people in Gilgil Town.

The suspect, a casual labourer, was arrested in Gilgil yesterday.

According to area police boss Emmanuel Opuru, the first incident was reported on September 1 where the suspect is said to have killed a man and left his wife with serious injuries at Mbeki.

The body of the man was found abandoned along the road. The woman was taken to Gilgil sub-county hospital.

The police said it may have been a case of a love triangle.

The second murder was reported on September 9, where a middle-aged woman was killed and her body dumped along the road at Kambi ya Somali.

“The body had several injuries. The man is suspected to have killed the woman after a disagreement but we are still investigating the real circumstances under which the woman was killed,” said Opuru.

He said detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had been trailing the suspect since the murders were reported.

The OCPD said the suspect was found with a mobile phone belonging to one of the victims.

The suspect had told the police he bought the phone from a local trader but failed to reveal the seller.

“We were trying to get the victims’ last communications when we found out that the suspect had his phone. He maintained that he had bought the phone but could not tell us who sold it to him,” said Opuru.

He said the suspect will be taken to court once investigations into the murders are complete.

The officer said the suspect’s statements over the killings are not consistent, reinforcing their suspicion he may have been involved.
