Man who narrowly escaped lynching charged with rape

A man who was almost lynched by a mob for allegedly sexually assaulting a young woman has finally been charged.

Justus Obonyo Wambia was charged with raping the 18-year-old woman on October 18 in Ematsayi village.

He was also charged with indecent assault.

The complainant was attacked at around 7pm while going home from a funeral in the company of a friend, who managed to flee.

Mr Obonyo is alleged to have pushed the teenager into a river and then removed her before raping her.

When the woman narrated her ordeal later, an angry mob apprehended the man and took him to Kakamega Central Police Station.

Obonyo, who bore injuries believed to have been caused by the mob, denied committing the offence before Senior Principal Magistrate Thomas Muraguri.
